Physical Education
INTENT
Our curriculum is designed to inspire physical competence and lifelong health and well-being by fostering an active lifestyle that continues after school. It will capture the interests of each pupil, providing exciting and enriching learning experiences which encourage children to be independent learners, to ask and answer questions and learn about the world around them. Children will progress through school learning about a variety of pupil-centred topics which are tailored to meet their individual needs and harness their love of learning.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our PE curriculum is taught:
- By providing challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, striking and fielding events, gymnastics, dance, OAA, DRUMBA and swimming
- Ensuring the requirements of the National Curriculum and EYFS Framework are met, following our long-term PE curriculum overview, ensuring lessons are progressive
- By delivering two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term.
- Children are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities available at lunch time and after school
- By well-trained class teachers, supported by a knowledgeable PE lead to provide high-quality learning
- We are part of the North Oxfordshire School Sports Partnership (NOSSP). This consists of 51 schools across North Oxfordshire and offers a range of benefits from sporting competitions to specialist PE mentors to support us with the delivery of high quality PE and school sport.NOSSP
In addition:
- We have an annual sports day (split into EYFS, KS1, LKS2 and UKS2) with an emphasis on both participation and achievement for all
- We offer an OAA residential experience for children in Year 4 and Year 6
IMPACT
Pupils will:
- Be observed and informally assessed during lessons. This will be against specific objectives set out in the national curriculum.
- Develop their fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities.
- Develop positive attitudes towards PE, understanding how it impacts their health and wellbeing
- Become confident within the different strands of PE and show resilience when tackling new skills.
- Have access to the full curriculum offer in PE. All pupils will be able to access PE
Swimming and Water Safety
Swimming is the only specific sport that must be taught to all children within the National Curriculum Physical Education programme of study. All primary schools must provide swimming and water safety lessons in either Key Stage 1 or 2.
Each pupil is required to do the following:
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.
Our swimming lessons take place at Bicester Leisure Centre for Year 5 children once a week during half of the school year for each class.
Extra-curricular Opportunities, Competitive Sport and Festivals
Our extra-curricular programme compliments and supplements the range of activities covered in curriculum time. Both teachers and qualified coaches are used at some of these sessions, but a member of staff will always be present. The school strives to offer a variety of sports and activities as additional extra-curricular opportunities, through lunchtime and after school clubs. This is offered additional to children's curricular entitlement.
From an early age competitive sport is also nurtured and encouraged with both KS1 and KS2. Children are regularly involved in intra school competitions. We hold regular intra school competitions and a separate Sports Day in which competition plays a key element, but participation is also recognised.
As part of the NOSSP we participate in a wide range of inter school festivals, both competitive and non-competitive, from year 1 through to year 6. These include hockey, multi-skills, dance and athletics plus many more. They offer children the chance to participate against other schools and always promote the School Sports Values of Respect, Passion, Honesty, Teamwork and Self Belief.
AWARDS
Our sporting commitment and achievements to delivering high quality PE lessons and sporting opportunities have been recognised with the school achieving the Bronze School Games Award and we look forward to progressing on our journey towards the Silver Award and beyond. We remain committed to PE and Sport and will continue to develop and improve the provision and opportunities available for our pupils.
