Year 1/2- Rabbits Class

Welcome to Rabbits Class, our class page will be updated throughout the year with information related to our Key Stage 1 curriculum along with updates and photographs of the exciting things that we have been getting up to.
English
In English the children will be exploring the text ‘The Journey Home’ by
Frann Preston-Gannon. Throughout the children’s learning journey, they will learn about endangered animals and the issues that they face on a day-to-day basis. They will explore habitats and understand why different animals are suited to different habitats whilst locating these in the world. They will write fact files about their animals and write their own thought-provoking persuasive letter.
The children will then look at the text ‘Dear Earth’ by Isabel Otter and illustrated by Clara Anganuzzi. Throughout the children’s learning journey, the children are challenged to think about and discuss the problems and solutions the planet faces. The children will then use all the skills and vocabulary covered to write their own extended informative leaflet about protecting the environment. They will finish with a letter to the earth, using the letter from the text and celebrating their own dreams and aspirations.
Maths
In Maths the children have been looking at number and will continue this during the Spring term.
In Year 1 the children will be looking at the composition of numbers the children will look at number and how they can be made up of smaller parts, focusing on numbers 0-10, while building the foundational addition and subtraction skills, and beginning to master number pairs to 10.
In Year 2 the children will be looking at representing counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The children will learn to skip counts as repeated addition and multiplication facts, using visual aids like number lines, arrays, and real-life objects and that link counting patterns to multiplication, word problems and building foundational knowledge for the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.
Science
In Science the children have been learning about habitats and this term they will learn about microhabitats. The children will begin by identifying and classifying minibeasts, going on a minibeast hunt and plan an experiment that they will conduct.
History
In History the children will be learning about how did we learn to fly. The children will be learning about the Wright brothers, Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart and why the moon landing was special.
Design and Technology
The children this term will be doing Textiles and will be learning to sew a pouch, they will be learning to do a running stich, using a template and designing and sewing a pouch.
Key Dates
PE Days are Thursday and Friday.
Every Thursday the children take part in indoor PE and the children will take part in outdoor PE on every Friday weather permitting.
Homework
Reading
Reading at home is one of the most important ways you can help your child and 10 minutes of reading per day will have a big impact to your children.
Read a range of books school will provide:
- Read Write Inc. books that have been read in school.
- A range of books to read for pleasure.
- Reading books for children that have completed the RWI program.
Parents will need to record the reading in the children’s reading diaries and books will be changed every Friday.
Spelling
Your child will be given spellings to practise each week.
They will be handed out on Friday with a spelling quiz to take place on the following Friday.
Maths
The children have access to Numbots which will help master their mental addition and subtraction skills, also helps the childrem build confidence and fluency in foundational maths through short, regular play.
